Holland BPW is bringing back Heatwave Sprinkling Hold Off to help residential customers save water on hot, dry days. This initiative is designed to encourage water conservation.

Why We Want to Conserve Water on Hot, Dry Days

Our Water Treatment Plant, connected to Lake Michigan, has a maximum treatment capacity of 38.5 million gallons per day. On an average day, we treat approximately 13 million gallons. However, during hot, dry summer days, usage can reach close to 30 million gallons per day. During stretches of hot weather without rain, the plant can come close to its maximum capacity.

If Holland BPW nears the State of Michigan mandated threshold of our Water Treatment Plant, we will need to investigate additional investments in new infrastructure to increase our treatment capacity. This can be very costly for the infrequent need of increased capacity. We are confident that the Water Treatment Plant is appropriately sized for our service area and are dedicated to bringing our customers the best value. Maintaining the current size of the Water Treatment Plant or making smaller incremental changes to treatment capacity is the best option for our customers.

How You Can Help

  • Sign up to receive notifications from Holland BPW. On hot, dry days, we’ll send a text/email message asking you not to water your lawn.
  • Notifications will be sent 1-3 days in advance.
  • Use less water than your monthly average on a designated day to qualify. This can be achieved by not watering your lawn and/or reducing non-critical water use in other ways.
  • Holland BPW will verify your reduced use through water meter data.
  • Hold Off giveaway will run from June – August. You must be signed up by July 15 and reduce your water use to receive a free native plant voucher.
  • Each participant with reduced water usage will receive one (1) voucher for a free native plant, redeemable at our Energy Saving Trees event later in the year.
