How fast is 2 Gig internet actually? How does this all work? What does 2 Gig mean?
While each of our utilities are equally complicated and important, fiber internet often has the greatest knowledge gap. For example, when your fridge breaks, you don’t blame your electric company. But if your computer isn’t working, you might blame your internet provider.

2 Gig internet refers to the speed of your internet. And the simplest way to explain 2 Gig internet speeds has to do with their capacity (also known as bandwidth).
Think of internet speed as a pipe. The larger the pipe, the more data can flow through at a single time. 2 gigabit (Gig) per second internet means that you can download up to 2,000 megabits per second. That’s the same as downloading a 100 gigabyte Call of Duty video game file in less than 2 minutes.
That may not seem like a big deal, but when your eldest is downloading Call of Duty while your youngest streams the newest Disney movie in 4K and you’re trying to finish a work assignment all at the same time, it makes a huge difference. That extra space in the pipe allows you to keep downloading, playing, working, or video calling without pauses or interruptions. It’s increasingly common for households to have smart thermostats, appliances, and outlets that also require internet connectivity all at once. While a single device might not be able to fully utilize 2 Gig or even 1 Gig speed, all the devices in your home, in aggregate, can exceed 1 Gig.

Our Wi-Fi routers that come free with the service are equipped with Wi-Fi 6, which also allows the ability to have a theoretical maximum of up to 9.6Gbps. While older devices or routers may not be able to fully take advantage of these speeds, having the technology ready for these upgrades keeps our services on the cutting edge.
The fiber internet we are currently installing in the city starts at 2 Gig with the ability to go up to 10 Gig. While very few companies or entities would need that size pipe at this moment, having infrastructure that will take us well into the future makes all the difference. So as streaming moves from 4K to 8 or 16K and more of our everyday devices require connection, Holland BPW Fiber will be ready to serve our community through each technology change.
