Why We Do This

Native plants are not only beautiful but also beneficial to our community and the environment. Because they are naturally adapted to our local climate and soil, native plants require far less water, fertilizer, and maintenance than non‑native species. Their deep, resilient root systems help stabilize the soil, reduce erosion, and improve water infiltration, which means healthier landscapes and less stormwater runoff. By reducing the amount of water used for irrigation, we can maintain our water treatment and reclamation facilities more effectively. Conserving water helps us avoid costly plant capacity expansion, keeps water rates lower, and supports environmental stewardship.

In addition to requiring less water, native plants also play a vital role in supporting local wildlife. They provide essential habitat and food sources for pollinators, birds, and other species that depend on them. A healthy, diverse ecosystem begins with the plants that are meant to grow here.

Unfortunately, most area stores carry only a small selection of native species, limiting the choices available to people who want to plant sustainably. By partnering with Ottawa Conservation District and local growers, we’re able to offer a much broader variety of native plants at affordable prices. This partnership helps make native landscaping accessible for everyone and helps us reduce irrigation use in our community.

Please mark your calendars and join us for a day of community, conservation, and greenery. We look forward to seeing you there!
