At Holland Board of Public Works, we’re committed to doing what’s best for our community and natural resources. Our recent project at Holland Energy reflects that commitment—an innovative way to manage water responsibly while meeting all state regulations.

As part of the original design of Holland Energy Park, we’ve implemented a process to discharge clean water from the cooling tower into the ponds in front of the plant. This water is not sewage—it comes only from the cooling tower and is carefully prepared for the environment. By redirecting this water to the ponds instead of sending it through the sewer to the Water Reclamation Facility, we avoid unnecessary treatment and make more efficient use of community resources. This change is expected to reduce wastewater flow by more than 100 gallons per minute, lowering costs and improving sustainability.
Safety measures are rigorous and continuous.
- The water flowing into the pond is monitored around the clock.
- The water is tested consistently by an independent third party to validate that it meets regulatory and environmental standards.
- We adjust the chemistry of the water to prepare it for entering the pond.
Natural water resources are strictly regulated by the State of Michigan, and Holland Board of Public Works went through an extensive permitting process to ensure compliance. We are steadfast in our commitment to meeting all regulatory standards and reporting requirements.
This project reflects our dedication to safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility—principles that guide everything we do at Holland Board of Public Works.
