Electronics
Broken and/or obsolete electronics do not belong in the trash. These items can contain PCB’s, lead and mercury. There are a variety of local organizations that will recycle what can be reused and properly dispose of what cannot be refurbished. MacMedia refurbishes usable computers and accessories and make them available to those who cannot afford a computer. Goodwill Industries accepts unusable, out-dated or broken computers and accessories and properly recycles the components.
Light Bulbs
Both traditional tube fluorescent and the new compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs are energy efficient, but it is important that they are disposed of properly because of the small amounts of mercury they contain. Allegan County accepts used CFLs. Home Depot accepts unbroken bulbs only. Unbroken CFL’s can also be brought to the Holland BPW Service Center, Customer Service Desk, at 625 Hastings Avenue.
Other Household Hazardous Waste/Non-hazardous Recyclables
Many other common household items should be disposed of properly, or recycled. Items such as mercury thermometers, needles for personal injections (aka sharps), paints, pesticides, and personal medications can all be hazardous to the environment or to other people if not handled properly. Ottawa County Resource Recovery Centers accept household hazardous waste at no cost to county residents, and non-hazardous recyclables for a fee. Allegan County programs and drop-off locations vary by township.
