During the
storm season, stay up to date on weather reports and be alert for tornado and
thunder storm advisories. Being prepared is your best defense. Install
lightning arrestors or voltage spike protectors to prevent possible damaging
surges. Have a dependable, battery-operated radio. Keep a good flashlight with
fresh batteries and bulbs handy. Know where your fuse box is located and keep
extra fuses available. Have several days' supply of drinking water for
everyone, including pets. Unplug TVs, stereos, computers and other appliances.
Make advance plans for evacuation, especially if you live in a mobile home or
low-lying area that may flood. Make sure your car has a full tank of gas a set
of jumper cables. (Service stations may not be able to operate pumps if the
electricity is out.) Know exactly where the nearest shelter is and the quickest
route to take. (Disaster authorities can tell you the nearest location.)
Securely anchor your mobile home.
