Energy Conservation Tips

  • Use natural light whenever possible and turn off unnecessary office lights.
  • Adjust blinds and window coverings on windows that receive direct sun.
  • If not using air conditioning, close windows and doors to prevent the loss of cooled air.
  • Turn off office equipment such as printers, computers and fax machines at night and over weekends when not in use. Adjust power management settings to activate “sleep” mode during periods of inactivity.
  • Close windows and doors to prevent the loss of cooled air. Adjust blinds and window coverings on windows that receive direct sun.
  • Plug all radios, cell phone and mp3 chargers, and other personal electronics into a power strip that can be turned off when not in use.
  • Install programmable thermostats. Keep air conditioning set to 78° F or higher and heating set to 68° F or lower.
  • Adjust your layers of clothing before adjusting the thermostat. Install a locked cover over the thermostat to prevent employees from changing the settings and maintain a steady temperature.
  • Turn off lights in unoccupied spaces. Install motion sensors in conference rooms, closets, restrooms and break rooms.
  • Encourage janitorial services personnel to clean together one floor at a time, lighting each floor as needed.
  • Perform routine and regular maintenance on mechanical equipment and buildings. Inspect and patch leaks, clean or replace air filters, check fan belts, lubricate motors, pumps and fans, clean condenser coils, ensure refrigeration seals are tight.
  • Replace T12 fluorescent lamps with T8s or T5s, which consume much less electricity.
  • Use LED (Light Emitting Diode) exit signs and other LED lighting and signage. An LED exit sign uses 80 to 95 percent less electricity and lasts 10 to 20 times longer than an incandescent-based sign.
  • Invest in energy-efficient equipment or appliances. Chose ENERGY STAR qualified products when upgrading or replacing equipment or appliances. These products meet federal standards for energy efficiency and are typically comparably priced.
