Holland Area Wastewater Treatment Plant

The Holland Area Wastewater Treatment Plant receives wastewater from five townships and the City of Holland. The wastewater influent arrives through two pipes. One comes from the north side and serves Park Township, Holland Township and Zeeland Township. The second comes from the south side and serves Fillmore Township, Laketown Township, part of Holland Charter Township, part of Park Township and the City of Holland.
The plant has a hydraulic loading capacity of approximately 12 Million Gallons per Day (MGD). On an average dry weather day, there is about 9 MGD of wastewater coming into the plant. The hydraulic capacity is variable based on environmental loadings such as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD).
Once in the facility, the influent is treated in several stages. The primary stage includes routing the wastewater to primary treatment clarifiers where about half of the pollutants in the wastewater are removed. The next step, secondary treatment, includes using biological and gravity treatments to bring the level of pollutants removed to over 85%. This meets all discharge permits issued by the EPA and DNRE, and allows the treated wastewater to be released to Lake Macatawa.
Several years ago, the Holland BPW partnered with several local government agencies, to fund the creation of an educational video about the importance of clean water.
