Downed Power Line

Fallen power lines are deadly! Call the Holland Board of Public Words (HBPW) immediately. Meanwhile stay away from power lines in your yard or in the street.

  • Don't touch any metal object near or try to move any object in contact with a fallen power line.
  • Don't trim trees or remove debris near power lines.
  • Don't step in any nearby water puddles, which can be as dangerous as the live wires themselves.

If you are in a vehicle that gets entangled in a power line, stay where you are. Don't try to get out unless fire or severe injury demands it. In those cases, jump so that you'll be totally clear of the vehicle and clear of the wires when you touch the ground. If you can't summon help or no help is available, try driving away so the wire may slide off.

The physical effects from contact with electricity may not be apparent immediately. If you have been shocked or come in contact with electric current do not delay seeking medical attention, as you may be injured internally and not know it.

To report a fallen line or power outage, please call 616.355.1500.  However, please don't call to report the same trouble more than once. Be assured, we will respond as soon as possible.

If you are in danger due to a downed powerline, then please call 911.
